Question
Answer
OCCLUSION   The relationship of the teeth in the mandibular arch to those in the maxillary arch as they are brought together.
🗑
NORMAL OCCLUSION   The best position to resist the forces. All teeth are in maximum contact with opposing arch.
🗑
CENTRIC RELATION   Pathway of closure of the mandible in which the mandible is in the most retruded position. This is a position relating to bone.
🗑
HABITUAL OCCLUSION   The voluntary end contact position, or intercuspation of the teeth.
🗑
WORKING SIDE   The occlusion of the teeth on the side toward which the mandible has been moved in a lateral glide movement.
🗑
BALANCING SIDE   The relationship of the teeth on the side opposite from the direction in which the mandible has been moved in a lateral glide movement.
🗑
PROTRUSIVE OCCLUSION   The occlusion of the teeth as the mandible is directed toward the incisal position of the central incisors until there is an edge to edge relationship.
🗑
LATERAL OCCLUSION   The occlusion of the teeth as the mandible is directed toward cuspid, bicuspid, and/or the molar teeth until there is a cusp to cusp occlusion
🗑
PHYSIOLOGIC REST POSITION   A postural position of the mandible under the influence of the resting length of the muscles which elevate and depress the jaw. It is a non contact position. Usually the teeth are about 3 mm open when the mouth is relaxed.
🗑
CUSPID RISE   In lateral occlusion, the cuspid assumes the entire occlusal load and there is no posterior contact. This is normal if there is no evidence of damage to the cuspid.
🗑
OVERBITE   The vertical superimposition of the maxillary anterior teeth over the mandibular anterior teeth in centric relation.
🗑
OVERJET   The horizontal superimposition of the maxillary anterior teeth over the mandibular anterior teeth in centric relation.
🗑
GROUP DISTRIBUTION   A term used to designate the fact that an acceptable number of teeth make simultaneous opposing tooth contacts when the teeth are in terminal end to end occlusion in lateral or protrusive positions of the mandible.
🗑
HOLDING OR BRACING CONTACTS   A sufficient number and distribution of opposing tooth contacts in centric occlusion which permits the mandible to assume and maintain centric relation without involuntary displacement of the mandible to a convenient position of occlusion.
🗑
PREMATURATY OR PREMATURE CONTACT   An initial point or area of contact of a tooth with an opposing tooth when it limits the opportunity of maximum intercuspation of the teeth in the jaws in any position.
🗑
INCLINED PLANE   The sloping or slanting occlusal anatomy of teeth. Used in reference to cuspid contact of teeth of the maxillary arch w/ those in the md arch, where the height of cusp contact is on an inclined surface rather than in the fossae and marginal ridges.
🗑
CENTRIC OCCLUSION   Most closed position. The cusps are coming together in maximum intercuspation.
