small intestine   The part of the digestive system where most chemical digestion takes place.

bile   A substance produced in the liver that breaks up fat particles.

gallbladder   The organ that stores bile.

pancreas   An organ that produces enzymes that are used in the small intestine to break down starches, proteins, and fats.

villi   Tiny finger-shaped structures that line the small intestine and absorb nutrient molecules.

large intestine   The last section in the digestive system; where water is absorbed from food, and the remaining material is prepared for elimination from the body.

rectum   A short tube at the end of the large intestine that compresses waste into solid form.

anus   A muscular opening at the end of the rectum through which wastes exit.
