small intestine | The part of the digestive system where most chemical digestion takes place. |
liver | Largest and heaviest organ; produces bile and helps eliminate nitrogen from the body. |
bile | A substance produced in the liver that breaks up fat particles. |
gallbladder | The organ that stores bile. |
pancreas | An organ that produces enzymes that are used in the small intestine to break down starches, proteins, and fats. |
villi | Tiny finger-shaped structures that line the small intestine and absorb nutrient molecules. |
large intestine | The last section in the digestive system; where water is absorbed from food, and the remaining material is prepared for elimination from the body. |
rectum | A short tube at the end of the large intestine that compresses waste into solid form. |
anus | A muscular opening at the end of the rectum through which wastes exit. |
