What are the Cholinergic Receptor Functions? | Nicotinic-N and Nicotinic-M
🗑
Where are Nicotinic-N receptors located and what do they do? | All ganglia and adrenal medulla. They stimulate postganglionic nerves and release of Norepinphrine.
🗑
Whatre are Nicotinic-M receptors located and what do they do? | The neuromuscular junction. They stimulate contraction of the skeletal muscles.
🗑
What muscarinic response is expected from each of these parasympathetic target organ? Eye, Heart, Lung, Bladder, GI Tract, Sweat Glands, Sex Organs, and Blood Vessels? | Eye: miosis, Heart: ↓ rate, Lung: constrict Bronchi and ↑ secretion, Bladder: voiding, GI Tract: salavation, ↑ secretions, motility and defecation, Sweat Glands: ↑ sweat, Sex Organs: erection, and Blood Vessels: vasodilation
🗑
What reactions do direct-acting muscarinic agonist have on the body? | All Muscarinic effects: ↓ heart rate ( - chronotropic), ↓ force of contraction ( - inotropic), vasodialation ( ↓ bp), ↑ GI Motility and Secretions, stimulate urine, and miosis.

Bethanechol (Urecholine)uses: | Muscarinic agonist
Uses: urinary retention--postoperative, postpartum, neurogenic bladder, Paralytic Ileus (postoperative)
🗑
Bethanechol (Urecholine) Adverse Effects: | Adverse Effects: higher incidence w/ SQ vs. PO--never IV or IM, hypotension, bradycardia, salvation, ↑ GI Acid, Cramps, Diarrhea, and brochoconstriction.
🗑
Bethanechol (Urecholine) Contraindications: | Intestinal Obstruction or Urinary Tract Obstruction, Asthma, Hyperthyroidism ( ↑ dysrhythmias), peptic ulcer diseas
🗑
Bethanechol (Urecholine) Nursing Implications: | Observe for therapeutic effects-Urination, Defecation. Teach to take between meals (reduces nausea)
🗑
Miotics -- Muscarinic Agonists uses: | pupil constriction, treats Glaucoma (reduces intraocular pressure)
🗑
Adverse effects of miotics: | systemic effects: eye- itching, pain, ciliary spasm, blurred vision (decreased accommodation)
🗑
Where should a nurse put pressure when administering eye drops? | Lacrimal ducts 1 -2 minutes after eye drops. This will help decrease systemic effects by reducing passage of drops to nasal passages.
🗑
What is the drug Acetylcholine (Miochol) used for? | Eye drops for miosis. It is a Cholinergic Agent (parasympathomimetic), a muscarinic agonist.
