Question | Answer |
What cranial nerves control the eyes? | CN III (Oculomotor), CN IV (Trochlear), and CN VI (Abducens). |
Otitis Media | Inflammation of the middle ear, occuring between tympanic membrane and inner ear. |
Kaposi's Sarcoma | Cancerous tumor of the connective tissue. Often associated with AIDS and found in cells lining the lymph/blood vessels. |
Apthous Ulcers | Canker sore, mouth ulcer. |
Macular degeneration | Loss of vision in the center of the visual field becaues of damage to the retina. |
Strabuismus | Condition where eyes are not properly aligned with each other. |
Scotomata | Diminished vision/blurred vision. |
Amaurosis | Vision loss not due to a lesion. |
Entropion | In-turned lid margin. |
Ectropion | Out-turned lid margin. |
Ptosis | Drooping/falling of the upper/lower eyelid. |
Hordeolum | Eyelid bump, a.k.a. stye. Sebaceous gland infection. |
Conjunctivitis | Swelling or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids (pink eye/madras eye). |
Pterygium | Surfer's eye. Non-cancerous growth of the clear thin tissue (conjunctiva) that lays over the white part of the eye. May be reduced with lowered sun exposure or surgery. |

Rinne test | Two fold hearing test involving bone conduction(BC) and air conduction(AC) with a tuning fork. Patient reports when sound of tuning fork ceases. AC=2x > BC or hearing problem is plausible. |
Whisper test | Hearing test involving 3 letters and numbers being whispered to a tested ear from a distance of 1-2 feet. Patient repeats back alphanumerical combination to verify auditory ability. |
