QuestionAnswer
Explain 2 ways a species can inhabit an ecosystem evolution and dispersal
Ecology the study of organisms and their interaction with all biotic and abiotic elements in their environment
Ecosystem the summation of organisms and the abiotic factors which they interact with in a given area.
Biome any of the world’s major ecosystem types (contains flora, fauna, abiotic factors, an ecosystem, and interaction)
Landscape an area containing several different ecosystems
Population a group of individuals within the same species
Climate is the long term prevailing weather of a given area
Microclimate climate patterns on a very fine scale (example the specific climate conditions of underneath a log)
Thermocline a narrow stratum of abrupt temperature change in the ocean
Precipitation the process of precipitating a substance from a solution (rain, snow, sleet, hail)
Canopy the uppermost layer of vegetation in a biome
Detritus is dead organic matter
Abiotic Factors are non living factors in an enviorment
Rain Shadow is a dry area on the lee back side of a mountainous area that results from the interaction of temperatures between a body of water and the high altitudes of mountain ranges
Latitude measurement of the earth widthwise (horizontally)
Longitude measurement of the earth lengthy (vertically)
Elevation height above sea level
Altitude heights above the ground
Topography the arrangement of an area’s natural features (mountains, bodies of water, etc.)
Ectone the transition of from one type of habitat/ecosystem to another
Autograph an organism that obtains food without eating other organisms derived from other organisms, they also use solar energy/oxidation
Heterotroph an organism that obtains food from eating other organisms derived from them.
Adaptive radiation is a period of evolutionary change when a group of organisms from various species adapt to fill ecological roles in their community
Habitat selection is when a species avoids a certain habitat even when the habitat is suitable for their needs
Climate change a lasting change in weather patterns over a long period of time
Ecological time the minute-to-minute time frame of interactions of organisms in an environment
Evolutionary time the time frame of evolution over many generations

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
