Bio Vocab 5 Levels of Organization

TermDefinition
carbohydrates that main source of energy and structural support (sugars)
lipids macromolecule that stores energy and are hydrophobic (fats)
nucleic acids macromolecule that stores and transmits genetic information (DNA, RNA)
proteins macromolecule that controls rate of reactions, fights disease, forms muscle and bone
atom the simplest piece of matter, one basic unit of a chemical element
molecule two or more atoms bonded together by chemical bonds
cells basic unit of life
tissue group of similarly specialized cells that perform certain special functions
organ group of tissues that together perform a specific function
organ system group of organs that work together to perform one or more funtion
organism an individual living thing that can react, grow, and maintain homeostasis (constant temp. water, etc).
