Outer Ear

QuestionAnswer
What is the basic function of the outer ear? To collect acoustic sound and direct it toward the TM.
What is the amplification effect of the outer ear? Theoretically - 15-17dB; Realistically - 3-5dB
What is the resonance of the EAM (without the effect of the pinna)? Characteristic resonant peak near 4kHz. Below 1.5kHz little or no effect of the EAM.
How does the pinna effect localization? Front and back - mainly due to shape of the pinna.
What is inter-aural time difference? Sound reaching the ears at different phases.
What is inter-aural level difference? Sounds reaching the ears are different levels of intensity.
Head-related transfer function The function describing the difference between the spectrum of the sound source and the spectrum at the TM.
What is the overall effect of the (frequency) signal? Many factors interact and impact the signal before it reaches the TM. The signal at the source is not the same as that which reaches the TM. Broad enhancement over 2-7kHz.
Resonance When a system amplifies certain frequencies more than others.
What is the resonant frequency for the pinna? 5kHz
What are the directions for localization? Horizontal (left/right) Vertical (up/down) Front/back

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
