Section 1.1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Astronomy | The study of objects beyond Earth's atmosphere |
| What do astronomers do? | Astronomers study the universe and everything in it including Earth, it's neighbors and other bodies in the universe |
| Meteorology | Studies the air that surrounds our planet |
| What do meteorologists do? | Meteorologists study the forces and processes that cause the atmosphere to change to produce weather. They also try and predict weather and how changes in weather might affect Earth's climate |
| Geology | The study of the materials that make up Earth and the processes that form and change them |
| What do geologists do? | Geologists identify rocks, study glacial movements, interpret clues to Earth's 4.6 billion-year history and determine how forces change our planet, amount many other things |
| Oceanography | The study of Earth's oceans, which cover nearly 3/4 of the planet |
| What do oceanographers do? | Oceanographers study the creatures that inhabit salty water, measure different physical and chemical properties of the oceans and observe various processes in these bodies of water |
| What is the Lithosphere? | Earth's lithosphere is the rigid outer shell of the planet and includes the crust and the solid uppermost part part of the layer below the crust, the mantel |
| What are the two kinds of crust in the Lithosphere? | 1. The continental crust, made mostly of granite 2. The oceanic crust, made primarily basalt |
| Describe the Mantel | Some of earths upper mantel behaves like a rigid solid while other parts of this layer are partially molten and flow like soft plastic. This molten layer is the asthenosphere |
| What 2 parts can Earth's core be divided into? | 1. outer liquid part 2. inner solid part |
| Are Earth's core and asthenosphere part of the lithosphere? | No but they do interact with it |
| What is the Atmosphere? | The blanket of gasses that surrounds our planet |
| What is the Atmosphere necessary for? | The atmosphere is necessary for respiration by most living things, protects Earth's inhabitants from harmful radiation from the sun and helps keel the planet at a temp. suitable for life |
| What is the hydrosphere? | The hydrosphere consists of the water in Earth's oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and glaciers as well as the water in the atmosphere |
| What is the Biosphere? | the biosphere includes all organisms on Earth as well as the environments where they live |
| In the four main systems, what one do we live on? | The Biosphere along with billions of other lifeforms |
| Earth Science can be broken into 4 major areas of specialization, what are they? | Astronomy, Meteorology, Geology, Oceanography |
