QuestionAnswer
Fossil remains, imprints, or traces of prehistoric organisms that cn tell when and where organisms once lived and how they lived
Mold a type of body fossil that forms in rock when an organism with hard parts is buried, decays, or dissolves and leaves a cavity in the rock
Cast when mineral rich water or other sediments enter the cavity , and harden to form a copy
Premineralized Fossil fossils in which the spaces inside are filled with minerals from ground water
Carbon Film Fossil thin film of carbon residue is left, forming a silhouette of the orginal organism
Trace Fossil fosilized tracks and other evidence of the activity of organisms
Orginial Remains when conditions allow orginl soft parts of organisms to be preserved for thousand or millions of years
Index Fossil remains of species that existed on Earth for a short period on time, were abundant and wide spread geographically, and can be used by geologists to assign the ages of rock layers
Example of Index Fossil Trilobite
Angular Unconformity 1 Sedimentary rocks are uplifted 2 exposed rock erodes 3 sedimentary rocks are desposited on top
Disconformity 1 Sedimentary rock exposed 2 Exposed rock erodes 3 sedimentary rocks are desposited on top
Nonconformity 1 Metamorphic or igneous rocks are uplifted 2 exposed rocks erodes 3 sedimetary rocks are desposited on top
Relative Age the age of something compared with other things
Principle of Superposition states in undisturbed layers of rock, the oldest rock are on the bottom and the younger rocks are on the top
Absolute Age the age in years or a rock or other objects
Radiometric Dating process used to calculate the absolute age of rocks by measuring the ratio of parentisotopes to daughter product in a mineral and knowing the half-life of the parent
Radioactive Decay the process of breaking down unstable isotopes and particles into other isotopes and particles
Half-life the time it takes for half of the atoms in the isotope to decay
Uniformitarianism states that Earth processes occuring tday are similar to those in the past
How old are the oldest rocks on earth 3.96 Billion Years old
Unconformity gaps in the rock layer that is due to erosion or periods with out desposition

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
