Matter Vocabulary
Question | Answer |

Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
Mass | The amount of matter in something |
Volume | The amount of space something occupies |
Solid | A substance or object that is solid rather than liquid or fluid |
Liquid | A fluid; will be same shape as any object it is put inside of. |
Gas | An air-like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity |
Physical Property | A property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance |
Chemical Property | A property that can only be observed by changing the identity of the substance |
Atom | Smallest unit of matter |
Atomic Number | Number of protons in an atom of a given element |
Atomic Mass | Number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom |
Nucleus | Center of the atom that has the protons and neutrons (heaviest part of the atom) |
Proton | Positive subatomic particle in the nucleus |
Neutron | Neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus |
Electron | Negative subatomic particle that is around the outside of the nucleus |
Malleability | Ability to be flattened into a sheet; bendable |
Ductility | Ability to be stretched into a wire |
Reactivity | Ability to react with another substance |
