| Term | Definition |

| Asthenosphere | a layer of hot soft rock in the upper mantle |
| Composition | the material that something is made up of |
| Crust | a thin layer of rock that surrounds the Earth |
| Density | the quantity of matter in a given amount of space; density determines if an material sinks or floats. |
| Lithosphere | the crust and the very top portion of the mantle together |
| Mantle | Earth’s thickest layer, it has a more rigid upper portion and a softer, lower portion |
| Outer core | a layer of hot liquid metals surrounding the inner core |
| Inner Core | a ball of hot, solid metals at the center of Earth (mostly iron and nickel) |
| Magma | hot fluid rock within or beneath the earth’s crust (pockets of magma can be found in the mantle) |
| Hot spots | places in the crust where heated fluid rock (magma) rises in thin columns from the mantle |
