| Life functions | Description |

| Nutrition | All activities involved in obtaining and processing food for energy. |
| Digestion | Part of Nutrition: Breaking down of complex substaces into simple substances |
| Egestion | Part of Nutrition:Removal of undigestible wastes. |
| Transport | The process by which substances move into or out of cells or are distrubuted within cells. |
| Absorption | Type of Transport: The movement of a substance, such as a liquid or solute, across a cell membrane by means of diffusion or osmosis. |
| Circulation | Type of transport: Distribution of the materials thoughout the organism. |
| Respiration | The release of stored energy from food (glucose). Aerobic = Uses oxygen to release stored energy from food. Anaerobic = Does not use oxygen but as a result yields less stored energy. |
| Excretion | Removal from the organism of waste substances producted by the cells during metabolic activities. |
| Growth | Increase in size or number of cells. |
| Synthesis | Opposite of digestion. "Building up or making more complex substances from simpler ones" |
| Reproduction | Production of new indivduals. Not nessacary for life of an individual but for the continuation of a new species. |
| Regulation | Control and cordination of all the various life activities. |
| Ingestion | Part of Nutrition: Taking in of food. |
| Metabolism | The sum of all the life functions. |
| Homeostasis | A balanced, stable internal environment. |
