Environmental Science and Ecology

QuestionAnswer
What is environmental science? The study of how humans can affect the environment.
What is ecology? The study of relationship between living organisms and a environment.
What is natural capital? On-earth resources (i.e. water, air soil, and nutrients)
What is sustainability? The ability of Earth's natural systems and human cultural systems to survive and adapt to changing conditions indefinitely.
What are natural resources? Matter and energy in nature that are essential or useful to humans.
What are natural services? Functuions of nature that support life (i.e. nutrient-cycling and photosynthesis).
What is a solar capital- Energy from the sun
What is Gross Domestic Product(GDP)- Annual market value of all goods and services produced by all firms and organizations, foreign, and domestic, operating within a country.
If population grows, what should happen to the GDP? It grows too
What do developed countries enjoy, beside higher standard of living? A longer life expectancy, a decrease in infant mortality, greater food production than food needs, a decreased air and water pollution, and an overall decrease in poverty.
What percent of projected growth between 2008 - 2050 is expected to occur in developing countries? 97%
What are renewable resources? Give three examples Well-replenished resources (i.e. solar energy, fresh air, forests, grasslands, etc.)
What are nonrenewable resources? Resources that are endangered in depletion (i.e. coal, petroleum, and natural gas).
What is the highest rate at which a renewable resource can be used indefinitely without reducing its available supply? Sustainable yield
What is the tragedy of the commons? Each user of an open access resource believes his/her contributiuon/use is not going to make a difference. There is great failure to consider that combined actions of many have a huge impact on the system.
What does the suggestions for sustainable use include? Reycling, reusing, and reducing
What are the three unwanted effects of pollution? 1.)Distrupts or degrade life-support systems 2.) Damage wildlife, human health, and property 3.) Create nuisance, such as noise, and unpleasant smells, tastes, and sights
What are the disadvantages of output controls? They are only short-lived solutions, costly, and often transfer pollutant into another area.
What are the basic causes of environmental problems? Population growth, unsustainable (& wasteful) resource use, poverty, poor environmental accounting, and ignorance of natural systems
What is the disadvantage of affluence? Consumes alot and wastes alot
What is the advantage of affluence? Development of technology
What are the four principles of sustainability? Reliance on solar energy, biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and population control
What result from the impoverished country's efforts to meet their short-term needs? Degradation and depletion of soils, forests, grasslands, fisheries, and wildlife
