Chapter 4 Vocabulary

Cell Theory All organisms are composed of cells. Cells are the smalllest living things. Cells arise only from pre-existing cells
Prokaryote A bacterium; a cell lacking a membrane-bounded nucleus or membrane-bounded organelles.
Eukaryote A cell characterized by membrane-bounded structure organelles, most notably the nucleus, and one that possesses chromosomes whose DNA is associated with proteins, an organism composed of such cells.
Organelle Specialized part of a cell; literally, a small cytoplasmic organ
Peptidoglycan A component of the cell wall of bacteria, consisting of carbohydrate polymers linked by protein cross-bridges.
Flagella A long, threadlike structure protruding from the surface of a cell and used in locomotion.
Nucleus Repository of genetic information.
Ribosome Molecular machine that carries out protein synthesis;
Endosymbiosis Theory that proposes that eukaryotic cells evolved from a symbiosis between different species of prokaryotes.
Extracellular Matrix Composed of various glycoproteins that give the cells support, strength, and resilience.
