1.1 Blood Clotting

Topic 1.1 Blood Clotting.

QuestionAnswer
Damage Occurs to Blood Vessel causing a Tear in the wall ----> Platelets have contact with the broken Collagen fibers and release two things: Serotonin and Thromboplastin.
What are the two things that are release when platelets come into contact with broken Collagen Fibers? Thromboplastin and Serotonin.
What does Serotonin do? Serotonin causes the blood vessel walls to constrict, which restricts the flow of blood to the damage area.
What is and what does Thromboplastin do? Thromboplastin is an ENZYME that converts Prothrombin (in the presence of Ca+ ions) to THROMBIN
Thrombin is and does what? Thrombin is an ENZYME that acts on the Plasma Protein FIBRINOGEN converting it to FIBRIN.
Name the 6 Major Proteins and Enzymes involved in blood clotting Serotonin, Thromboplastin, Prothrombin, Thrombin, Fibrinogen, Fibrin
Fibringogen is what? Fibrinogen is a plasma protein which is converted to FIBRIN when Thrombin acts upon it.
What does Fibrin? Fibrin form forms a mesh of fibers to help hold the clot together and catch other cells to reinforce the clot.
Prothrombin is what? Prothrombin is a Plasma Protein which is converted to Thrombin by the enzyme Thromboplastin in the presence of Ca+ ions.
What helps control the formation of the clot? Anti-Thrombin 3 and Protein C.
What negative effects on the CV system can a tear in a Vessel cause? Decreased blood pressure and a decrease in blood volume leading to Death of organism.
Name two positives of a clot forming at a wound site. Decreased risk of blood loss and prevents pathogens from entering the body.
Fibrin is... INSOLUBLE!!
