Biology- Chap. 3

Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings. Ecology
The largest of nature's houses. Contains the combined portions of the planet in which life exists, including land, water, and air. Biosphere
A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring. Species
Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. Population
Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area. Community
A group of ecosystems that have the same and climate and similar dominant communities. Biome
Plants, some algae, and bacteria that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use that energy to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic molecules. Autotrophs, Producers
The process in which some autotrophs harness solar energy. Photosynthesis
When organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates. Chemosynthesis
Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply. Heterotrophs, Consumers
Consumers that eat only plants. Herbivores
Consumers that eat only animals. Carnivores
Consumers that eat both plants and animals. Omnivores
Consumers that feed on another organisms remains and other dead matter. Detritivores
Consumers that break down organic matter. Decomposers
A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. Food chain
Network of complex interactions formed by the feeding of various organisms in an ecosystem. Food web
Each step or level in a food chain or food web. Trophic level
A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web. Ecological pyramid
The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. Biomass
Process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another. Biogeochemical cycle
The process by which water changes from liquid to an atmospheric gas. Evaporation
The process in which water enters the atmosphere by evaporating from leaves of plants. Transpiration
All the chemical substances that an organism needs to sustain life. Nutrients
The process of converting nitrogen gas into ammonia. Nitrogen fixation
Conversion of nitrates into nitrogen gas. Denitrification
The rate at which organic matter is created by producers. Primary productivity
Single nutrient that either is scarce or cycles very slowly, limiting the growth of organisms in an ecosystem. Limiting nutrient
An immediate increase in he amount of algae and other producers that results from a large input of a limiting nutrient. Algal bloom

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
