What is the definition of 'geology'? literally means 'study of Earth'. Divided into two broad areas: Physical and Historical geology.
What is the definition of 'astronomy'? the study of the universe.
What is the definition of'atmosphere'? A life giving gaseous envelope which surrounds the Earth.
What is the definition of 'Hydrosphere'? a dynamic mass of liquid that is continually on the move.
What is the definition of 'lithosphere'? refers to the rigid outer layer that includes the crust and upper most mantle.
What is the definition of 'biosphere'? includes all life on Earth.
What is the definition of 'Core'? the dense inner sphere of the Earth. Consists of inner and outer core.
What is the definition of 'mantle'? the less dense layer between the core and crust. Consists of upper and lower mantle.
What is the definition of 'crust'? the light and very thin outer skin of Earth.
What is the definition of 'Earth System Science'? Studying Earth as a system and learning how its individual components are interconnected.
What is the definition of a 'system'? any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole.
What is the definition of a 'closed system'? energy moves freely in and out but no matter enters or leaves.
What is the definition of an 'open system'? both energy and matter flow freely in and out
What is the definition of a 'negative feedback mechanism'? mechanisms that work to maintain the system as it is.
What is the definition of a 'positive feedback mechanism'? mechanisms that enhance or drive change.
What is the definition of 'environment'? refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
What is the definition of 'physical environment'? encompasses water, air, soil, and rock as well as conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight.
What is the definition of 'renewable resources'? resources that can be replenished over short time spans.
What is the definition of a 'hypothesis'? an untested explanation for why things happen.
What is the definition for 'model'? a less precise hypothesis which also sometimes describes a scientific theory.
What is the definition of 'theory'? a hypothesis which has survived extensive scrutiny and eliminated competing models, moving up to theory status.
What is the definition of a 'paradigm'? a theory that is held with a high degree of confidence; that explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
What is the definition of 'Nebular Hypothesis'? suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula.
What is the definition of 'oceanography'? the study of the composition and movements of seawater, as well as coastal processes, seafloor topography, and marine life.
What is the definition of 'meteorology'? the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
