Chapter One: The Science of Biology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Aerobic=process that requires oxygen | process that requires oxygen |
| Anabolism | the constructive part of metabolism concerned especially with macromolecular synthesis |
| Anaerobic | process that does not require oxygen |
| Asexual reproduction | process by which a single parent reproduces by itself |
| Assimilation | the incorporation or conversion of nutrients into protoplasm that in animals follows digestion and absorption and in higher plants involves both photosynthesis and root absorption |
| Biology | science that seeks to understand the living world |
| Catabolism | metabolism involving the release of energy and resulting in the breakdown of complex materials (as proteins or lipids) within the organism |
| Cell | collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings; basic unit of all forms of life |
| Cell Culture | group of cells grown in a nutrient solution from a single original cell |
| Cell Fractionation | technique in which cells go through as they grow and divide |
| Celsius scale | scale according to which the temperature difference between the reference temperatures of the freezing and boiling points of water is divided into 100 degrees |
| Compound Light Microscope | microscope that allows light to pass through a specimen and uses two lenses to form an image |
| Control | an experiment in which the subjects are treated as in a parallel experiment except for omission of the procedure or agent under test and which is used as a standard of comparison in judging experimental effects |
| Data | evidence; information gathered from observations |
| Electron Microscope | microscope that forms an image by focusing beams of electrons onto a specimen |
| Homeostasis | process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment |
| Hypothesis | possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question |
| Inference | logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experiences |
| Kilogram | a unit of force or weight equal to the weight of a kilogram mass under a gravitational attraction equal to that of the earth |
| Limit of Resolution | the capacity of an optical system to resolve point objects as separate images |
| Manipulated Variable | factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes |
| Metabolism | set of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes |
| Metric System | decimal system of measurement based on certain physical standards and scaled on multiples of ten |
| Multicellular | consist of more than one cell, in contrast to single-celled organisms |
| Nutrition | the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances |
| Observation | use of one or more of the senses to gather information |
| Qualitative | pertaining to or concerned with quality or qualities |
| Quantitative | pertaining to the describing or measuring of quantity |
| Respiration | the placing of air or dissolved gases in intimate contact with the circulating medium of a multicellular organism (as by breathing) |
| Responding Variable | factor in an experiment that a scientist wants to observe, which may change in response to the manipulated variable |
| Response | single, specific reaction to a stimulus |
| Scanning probe microscope | An image of the surface is obtained by mechanically moving the probe in a raster scan of the specimen, line by line, and recording the probe-surface interaction as a function of position |
| Science | organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world |
| Scientific Method | principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses |
| Sexual Reproduction | process by which cells from two different parents while to produce the first cell of a new organism |
| Stimulus | a signal to which an organism responds |
| Theory | well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations |
| Transmission electron microscope | operates on the same basic principles as the light microscope but uses electrons instead of light |
| Unicellular | having or consisting of a single cell |
| Variable | A factor or condition that is subject to change, especially one that is allowed to change in a scientific experiment to test a hypothesis |
