|---|---|
| Ecology | The study of interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment. |
| Abiotic | Describes the nonliving part of the environment, including water, rocks, light, and temperature. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a common function. |
| Organ system | A group of organs to perform body functions. |
| Population | A group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical area. |
| Ecosystem | A community of organisms and their abiotic, or nonliving, environment. |
| Biosphere | The part of Earth where life exists; includes all of the living on Earth. |
| Biotic | Describes living factors in the environment. |
| Cell | The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms; usually consists of a nucleus, cytoplasm, and a membrane. |
| Organ | A collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body. |
| Organism | A living thing, anything that can carry out life independently. |
| Community | All of the populations of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other. |
| Biome | A large region characterizing by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animals communities. |
| Consumer | An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter. |
| Decomposer | An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients. |
| Producer | An organism that can make it's own food by using energy from it's surroundings. |
| Herbivore | An organism who only eats plants. |
| Omnivore | An organism who eats both plants and animals. |
| Scvenger | An organism that feeds on dead organic matter. |
| Carnivore | An organism that eats animals. |
| Food web | A diagram the shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. |
| Food chain | The pathway of energy transfer through various stayed as a result of the feeding patterns of a series of organisms. |
| Trophic Level | Any class of organisms that occupy the same position in food chain, as primary consumers and tertiory. |
| Energy | The capacity to do work. |
| Energy Pyramid | A triangular diagram that shows ecosystems loss of energy, which results as energy passes through the ecosystem's food chain; each row in the pyramid represents a trophic (feeding) level in an ecosystem. |
| Carrying Capacity | The largest population that an environment support at any given given time. |
| Prey | An organism that is killed by another organism. |
| Symbiosis | A relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each other. |
| Commersalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is affected. |
| Mutualism | A relationship between two species in which both species benefit. |
