Dementia & Delirium - Chapter 12

Can delirium and dementia occur at any age? Yes
Causes of Delirium Infections, fevers, metabolic disorders, medications, neurological diseases, Increased ICP
Delirium is... an acute confusional state & a fluctuating mental state
Dementia is... chronic and progressive, usually alert and aware
Causes of Dementia Degenerative disease of the brain, multiple strokes, or chronic infection
Lab Tests for Delirium electrolytes, CBC, toxicology, liver funtion, blood and urine culture
Diagnostic Tests for Delirium ECG, EEG, CT/MRI, Lumbar Puncture
Tx of Delirium General supportive measures & tx of underlying conditions
Dx of Dementia r/o anything that is treatable
Dementia causes a gradual decline of memory, language and higher executive functions
Alzheimer Disease Alzheimer's disease causes brain changes that gradually get worse. It's the most common cause of dementia — a group of brain disorders that cause progressive loss of intellectual and social skills, severe enough to interfere with day-to-day life.
Huntington Disease A hereditary disease that typically appears in midlife, marked by gradual loss of brain function and voluntary movement. Results in dementia
Parkinsonism a neurologic disorder characterized by tremor, muscle rigidity, hypokinesia, a slow shuffling gait, and difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and speaking and caused by various lesions in the extrapyramidal motor system. Not thought to be genetic.
Lewy Body Disease Build up of plaques in the brain due to increased cholesterol
Pick Disease a form of dementia that may occur in middle age. This disorder mainly affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain and characteristically produces slow disintegration of intellect, personality, and emotions and degeneration of cognitive abilities.
