Section 3.1
The Cellular Level of Organization
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Organelles | Small, often membranous structure in the cytoplasm having a specific structure and function |
| Cell theory | all organisms are composed of one or more cells, cells are the basic living unit of structure adn function in organisms, all cells come only from other cells |
| Plasma Membrane | Membrane surrounding the cytoplasm that consists of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins; regulates the entrance and exit of molecules from the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | contents of a cell between the nucleus and the plasma membrant that contains the organelles. |
| Prokaryotic Cells | lack a membrane-bounded nucleus |
| Cell wall | structure that surrounds a plant, protistan, fungal, or bacterial cell and maintains the cell's shape and rigidty. |
| Capsule/Slime layer | gelatinous layer surrounding the cells of blue-green algea and certain bacteria |
| Flagellum | long, slender extension used for locomotion by some bacteria, protozoans, and sperm. |
| Fimbriae | short appendages that help them attach to an appropriate surface |
| Nucleoid | region of prokaryotic cells where DNA is located; is not bounded by a nuclear envelope |
| Plasmids | small accessory rings of DNA |
| Ribosomes | RNA and protein in two subunits; site of protein sythesis in the cytoplasm |
| thylakoids | Flattened sac within a granum whose membrane contains chlorophyll and where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur |
