What is Astronomy? the study of the universe
What is a live-giving gaseous envelope that surrounds earth? the atmosphere
What is biosphere? Where does it start and where does it end? All life on Earth. Ocean floor to several kilometers into the atmosphere
What is a system that is self-contained with regard to matter? closed system
What is the core of the Earth? A dense inner sphere
What is the crust of the Earth? A light and very thin outer skin of Earth.
What is the study of the Earth and all living things on it? Earth Science
What is Earth System Science? To study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts, or subsystems.
What is envirnoment? Everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
What is Geology? Study of Earth
What is Hydrosphere? Dynamic mass of liquid that is continually moving, evaporating from the oceans and to the atmosphere, preticipating to the land, and running back to the ocean again.
What is Hypothesis? A scientific guess that might be proven wrong during the experiment.
What is lithosphere? Rigid outer layer that includes the crust and upper mantle.
What is the Mantle? Less dense the core and encompasses it
What is Meteorology? Study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
What is a Model? Less precise term sometimes used to describe a scientific theory
What is a nebular hypothesis? Suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud.
What is a negative feedback mechanism? Cooling phenomenon works to stabilize our body temp.
What is a nonrenewable resource? resources that cant be replenished after they have been used
What is oceanography? Involves the application of all sciences in a comphrensive and irrelated study of the oceans in all of their aspects and relations.
What is an open system? Both energy and matter flow into and out of the system
What is a paradigm? Explain a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
What is a physical environment? encompasses water, air, soil, and rock, as well as conditions such as temp. humidity, and sunlight.
what is a positive feedback mechanism? Enhance or drive change
What is renewable resource? can be replenished over relatively short time spans.
What is a system? any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole
What is a theory? well-tested and widely accepted view that the scientific community agrees upon
