Question | Answer |
---|---|
Astronomy | The study of the universe |
Atmosphere | A life giving gaseous envelope Earth is surrounded by |
Biosphere | Includes all life on Earth |
Closed system | A self contained system with regard to matter. Althrough energy moves in and out of a closed system, no matter enters or leaves the system. |
core | a dense inner sphere |
crust | the light and very thin outer skin of Earth |
Earth Science | The name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space |
Earth system science | aims to study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts, or subsystems. |
Environment | refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism |
Geology | the study of Earth |
Hydrosphere | a dynamic mass of liquid that is continually on the move, evaporating from the oceans to teh atmosphere, precipitating to the land, and running back to the ocean again. |
Hypothesis | a tentative or untested explanation |
Lithospere | the rigid outer layer that includes the crust and uppermost mantle |
mantle | less dense than the core of Earth |
Meteorology | the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate |
Model | a less precise term sometimes used to describe a scientificc theory as well as a hypothesis |
Nubular hypothesis | suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula, composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with a small percentage of the heavier elements |
negative feedback mechanism | works to maintain the system as it is, or in other words to maintain the status quo |
Nonrenewable Resource | a resource that cannot be replenished over relatively short time spans |
Oceanography | involves the application of all sciences in a comprehensive and interrelated study of the oceans in all their aspects and relationships |
Open system | both energy and matter flow into and out of the system |
Paradigm | Theories that are extensively documented and are held with a very high degree of confidence |
Physical Environment | includes water, air, soil, and rock, as well as conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight |
Positive Feedback Mechanism | mechanisms that enhance or drive change |
Renewable Resource | a resource that can be replenished over relatively short time spans |
System | any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole |
Theory | formed when a hypothesis has survived extensive scrutiny and when competing models have been eliminated |
