Biosphere All life on Earth.
Closed System Self-contained with regard to matter.
Core A dense inner sphere.
Crust The light and very thin outer skin of Earth.
Earth Science The name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space. It includes geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.
Earth System Science Aims to study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts, or subsystems.
Environment Refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
Geology Means study of Earth. Divided into two areas- physical and historical.
Hydrosphere A dynamic mass of liquid that is continually on the move, evaporating from the oceans to the atmosphere, precipitating to the land, and running back to the ocean again.
Hypothesis A tentative explanation.
Lithosphere The rigid outer layer that includes the crust and uppermost mantle.
Mantle The area less dense than the core.
Meteorology The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
Model Although often used synonymously with hypothesis, is a less precise term because it is sometimes used to describe a scientific theory as well.
Nebular Hypothesis Suggests that the bodies of oursolar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula, composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with a small percentage of the heavier elements.
Negative Feedback Mechanism Work to maintain the system as it is, or in other words to maintain the status quo.
Nonrenewable Resource The processes that create them are so slow that significant deposits take millions of years to accumulate.
Oceanography Involves the application of all sciences in a comprehensive and interrelated study of the oceans in all their aspects and relationships.
Open System Both energy and matter flow into and out of the system.
Paradigm Explain a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
Physical Environment The factors in the environment.
Positive Feedback Mechanism Mechanisms that enhance or drive change.
Renewable Resource Resources that can be replenished over relatively short time spans.
System Can be any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole.
