Expectorants They thin mucus so it can be coughed up. A common over-the-counter is guiafenesin found in many cough meds
Sterioid Anti-inflammatories often prescribed to decrease sweeling and inflammation of the air passages. Can be prescribed with bronchodilators to increase air movement with asthma and emphysema. oral med used is prednisone. inhaler med used is flovent
Topical Meds applied directly to the skin to treat local lesion or can be delievered systemically via transdermal patch wich is absorbed into the blood stream.
Antianginals increase the amount of blood and oxygen to the heart. Most common antianginal med is Nitroglycerin (Nitrostat)
Antiarrhythmics given to regulate the heart beat. Often slows the heartbeat and decrease blood pressure. Common meds are amiodarone (cordarone) and nifedipine (Procardia) MUST CHECK BLOOD PRESSURE.
Anticoagulants Known as blood thinners. used to prevent conditions like heart attack, stroke, and blood clot formation. Routine blood test are done. Common IV med is Heparin. common oral med is coumadin
Antihyperlipidemics used to treat high cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. common meds are Lipitor and Vytorin. People on these should eat less animal fat
Antihypertensives used to lower blood pressure. MUST CHECK BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE.
Antihypertensives ACE inhibitors prevent blood vessels from narrowing example is captropril (Capoten)
Antihypertensives Beta blockers slow the heartbeat example is Metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL)
Antihypertensives Calcium channel blockers keep the arteries dilated example is Amlodipine (Norvasc)
Antihypertensives Vasodilators cause arterie walls to open widder example is Hydralazine (Apresoline)
Cardiac Glycosides Slows and Strengthen the heartbeat. common drug is Digoxin given to people with CHF. Should always check blood pressure
Digoxin side effects include blurred or yellow tinted vision, seeing halos around lighted objects
Decongestants opens the air passages in the nose and sinuses by constricting blood vessels in those areas. they can be oral meds, nose drops or nose sprays. they can also raise blood pressure
Bronchodilators This classification include IV, oral and inhalers. commonly prescribed meds are Corophylline and Theodur. commonly used inhalers are Albuterol and Metaproterenol. side effects are nervousness, insomnia, tremors, anxiety, nausea and vomiting
Antitussives act on the brain to control coughing. many are over the counter. Prescribtion cough meds contain codiene, a narcotic which also supresses coughing. Cough meds with codiene is only ordered when the cough doesnt produce sputum
Antihisamines block the action of histamine, which decreases allergy symptoms
Antihisamines These meds are prescribed for mild respiratory allergies such as hay fever and sinus conditions. commonly used meds are Benadryl and Claritin
Skeletal Muscle Relaxants Prescribed to relax the muscles and decrease pain. often used with anti-inflammatories. common prescribed meds are Soma, Rela, Sodol and Flexeril. they can cause sedation.
Antipsychotics Helps with certain mental illness (psychoses)Psychoses cause hallucinations, delusions and paranoia. these help decrease psychotic behavior. common meds are Haldol and Thorazine
Antiparkinson Medications these meds are ordered to correct the brain imbalance and to relieve the symptoms
Antiparkinson Medications common meds are Levodopa (Laradopa) and a combo drug Levodopa/carbidopa (Sinement) if becoming toxic on the med they may experience twitching and eye spasms
Antidepressants given to relieve depression and are also given to treat certain types of pain like migraines. commonly prescribed meds are Xanax, Zoloft and Cymbalta
Anticonvulsants convulsion is another word for seizure. they are ordered to help people prone to seizures. common meds are Dilantin, Depakote, and Tegretol
Antianxiety/Sedative Medications these meds are used to reduce the activity of certain brain chemicals to help control anxiety

Analgesics used to relieve pain. Pain is a symptom not an illness. 2 main types- narcotic and non-narcotic.
Antineoplastics used to treat cancer by preventing growth of cancer cells. These meds are all extremely toxic
Anti-inflammatories Helps with inflammation, sweeling pain and heat. other groups are referred to as NSAIDS. They often cause gastrointestinal side effects
NSAIDS stands for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Antifungals used to treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot and yeast infections. most are topical creams or ointments
Antivirals very few meds exist. the commonly prescribed drug is Zovirax which is used for the herpes virus. Zidovudine is used to treat HIV & AIDS
Antibiotics used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Most common one prescribed is Zithromax or also known as the Z-pack
Thyroid Replacement Hormone When the thyroid gland doesn't function properly a synthetic hormone is prescribed. the most common med prescribed is Synthroid
Steroids ordered to relieve inflammation and to treat diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. can be oral tablets or cream.
Steroids common cream is Hydrocortisone cream
Steroids common oral is Prednisone
Reproductive Hormones may be ordered during menopause to minimize symptoms. can also be ordered to be used by males with certain types of cancer. common med used is Estradiol
Antidiabetics meds for diabetics- a disease that affects the pancreas, which makes insulin. most common med is Metformin.
Laxatives and Stool Softeners used to relieve constipation. Stool softeners keep the large intestine from absorbing to much water from the feces
Anti-reflux Medications works by decreasing or blocking the amount of acid produced by the stomach. common meds are Nexium, Prilosec and Zantac
Antiemetics This group pf meds are ordered to relieve nausea and vomiting. common meds used are Phenergan and Zofran
Anticholinergics blocks the action of the parasympathetic nervous system. they slow peristalsis and reduce stomach acid production
Antacids neutralize stomach acid to make it less acidic. commonly prescribed antacids are Amphogel, Didel, Mylanta and Maalox
Antiglaucoma helps decrease the pressure of the fluid within the eye. commonly used meds are Epinephrine, Pilocarpine and Timolol
Vasodilators means to widen blood vessels. used to lower blood pressure and treat poor circulation to various parts of the body. ALWAYS CHECK BLOOD PRESSURE.
dIURETICS helps the body rid itself of excess water through urine. also known as "water pills". Thiazide has a side effect of depleting the body of potassium.
