What is Earth Science? Name for all sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space
What is Geology? Word that means"study of Earth"
What is Oceanography? Application of all sciences in a comprehensive and interrelated study of the oceans in all of their aspects and relationships
what s Astronomy? The study of the universe
What is the Nebular Hypothesis? The theory that the solar system evolved from an enormous cloud called the Solar Nebula
What is the hydrosphere? A dynamic mass of liquid that is continually on the move
What is the atmosphere? A life giving gaseous envelope
What is the core? The dense inner sphere of the earth
What is the mantle? More outward and less dense part of the earth
What is the crust? The thinnest and last layer of the earth
What is the lithosphere? The rigid outer layer of the earth that includes the crust and mantle
What is earth system science? An aim to study earth as a system composed of many interacting parts
What is a system? Can be any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole
What is a closed system Self contained with a regard for matter
What is an open system? Mostly natural, and both energy and matter go into and out of the system
What is a negative feedback mechanism? Help to maintain the system as it is
What is a positive feedback mechanism? Mechanisms that enhance or drive
What is a theory? Well tested and widely accepted view
What is a Paradigm? They explain a wide number of interrelated aspects of the natural world
What is meteorology? The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate
What is the biosphere? It is all life on earth
What is an environment? Everything that surrounds and influences an organism
What is the physical environment? Includes Water, air, soil, and rock and conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight
What is a renewable resource? Means they replenish over relatively short periods of time
What is a nonrenewable resource? Metals such as Iron, aluminum, and copper are in this category, it means they replenish over a long period of time
What is a hypothesis? An untested explanation for something
What is a model? It is a less precise term that is sometimes used to describe a scientific theory
