What is astronomy? Astronomy is the study of the universe.
What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere is the life-giving gaseous envelope surrounding Earth.
What is the biosphere? The biosphere includes all life on planet Earth.
What is a closed system? A closed system is a system where energy flows in and out but no matter enters or leaves the system.
What is the core? The core is the dense inner sphere of the Earth.
What is the crust? The crust is the thin outer skin of the Earth.
What is Earth science? Earth science is the name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space.
What is an Earth system science? Earth system science aims to study Earth as a system and an interlocking set of subsystems.
What is environment? Environment is everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
What is geology? Geology is the study of Earth, divided into physical and historical areas.
What is the hydrosphere? The hydrosphere is a mass of liquid that is continually moving, evaporating and precipitating.
What is a hypothesis? A hypothesis is an untested explanation. Also called a model.
What is the lithosphere? The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of the Earth, including the crust and the upper mantle.
What is the mantle? The mantle is the layer of the Earth under the crust that is less dense than the core.
What is meteorology? Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
What is a model? A model is synonomous to a hypothesis, or untested explanation.
What is the nebular hypothesis? THe nebular hypothesis suggestes that the bodies of our solar system evovled from a solar nebula.
What is a negative feedback mechanism? A negative feedback mechanism is a mechanism that works to maintain a system.
What is a nonrenewable resource? A nonrenewable resource is a resource that is replenished slowly, over many millions of years.
What is oceanography? Oceanography is the application of science to study and understand the oceans and their relationships.
What is an open system? An open system is a system where both matter and energy flow in and out.
What is a paradigm? A paradigm is a theory that explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
What is the physical environment? The physical environment includes all nonliving factors in the environment.
What is a positive feedback mechanism? Positive feedback mechanisms enhance or drive a change in a system.
What is a renewable resource? A renewable resource is a resource that can be replenished over a short period of time.
What is a system? A system is any size group of interacting parts tha form a complex whole.
What is a theory? A theory is a hypothesis that has survived testing and scrutiny to be proved true.
