C12) Interference

Chemicals interfere with cell metabolism.

QuestionAnswer
Define drug. Any chemical that affects the physiological state of an organism.
Define antibiotic. A chemical which will inhibit the growth of bacteria, often used in medicine.
Define fuel. Materials that may be burnt to produce heat energy for industrial purposes or transport. Eg. petrol, oil and coal.
Define toxic. The general name given to poisonous chemicals.
Define hyperventilation. Rapid shallow breathing, usually caused by an imbalance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air.
Define suffocation. Difficulty in breathing due to lack of oxygen.
Define metabolic poison. Any chemical which interferes with reactions inside cells.
Define insecticides. Chemicals which specifically kill insects.
Define weedicides. Chemicals which specifically kill weeds.
Define CFC. Chlorofluorocarbons. Used in refrigerators and known to destroy ozone.
Define ozone. O3. Is formed in the upper atmosphere and absorbs a high proportion of UV radiation from the sun.
Define ultraviolet. Non-visible light which can cause damage to body cells, especially skin.
Define organic. Molecules consisting of mostly carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms which are made by organisms.
Define inorganic. Atoms, ions and other chemicals which are not made by organisms. Eg. minerals
Define nuclear fission. The process by which large nuclei (eg. uranium) can be split into smaller atoms, releasing small particles and energy.
What do high concentrations of alcohol do? Interfere with cell metabolism leading to cirrhosis of the liver and eventual cell death.
What do illegal drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocain, amphetamines, ecstasy, etc. do? Interfere with cellular activity, particularly at neurons.
What is Zanamivir and how does it work? An antiviral drug which is will used to treat people with influenza. It acts by blocking the active site on the enzyme neuraminidase which is crucial to the replication of the influenza virus.
What are the disadvantages of drugs? Many are addictive and can lead to mental and physical illnesses and eventual death.
What are the disadvantages of fuels? Their incomplete combustion causes gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that accumulate in the atmosphere and adversely affect metabolism when inhaled.
Why is carbon monoxide toxic? It binds with haemoglobin in the blood and to another enzyme involved with cellular respiration, causing death.
What are the disadvantages of fertilisers? They are highly water soluble and can be carried through soil to underground water supplies, increasing the concentration of dissolved mineral ions, resulting in eutrophication.
Examples of chemicals that have been later discovered to have detrimental effects? DDT and CFCs
