Strong Adaptations

Adaptation-Ecology

QuestionAnswer
natural selection that organisms best adapted to their environments will survive the best developed by Charles Darwin
adaptation a trait that improves an organism's ability to survive and reproduce type of bird beak indicates type of food a bird eats
structural adaptations physical traits that allow an organism to be successful (what an organism has) some animals have claws that help them to dig, hunt, eat their food
behavioral adaptations behaviors that allow an organism to be successful (what an organism does) animals that are active at night to avoid competition
endotherm warm-blooded : the body regulates internal temperature birds and mammals
exotherm cold-blooded : the environment controls internal temperature insects, amphibians, reptiles
homeostasis the ability for an organism to maintain a stable internal temperature a lizard sitting on a rock in the sun to warm up
predation one animal eating another lion hunting an antelope
predator the animal that hunts and eats other animals has structural adaptations like sharp teeth, good eyesight, claws
prey the animal that is hunted and eaten by other animals structural adaptations like camouflage and mimicry to avoid predators
competition when two or more organisms are competing for the same resources lions and hyenas fighting for same food
symbiosis a relationship between 2 organisms oxpecker birds and rhinos
mutualism a relationship where both organisms benefit shark and remora fish
commensalism a relationship where one organism benefits and the other one is unaffected barnacles on whales
parasitism a relationship where one organism benefits, but the other organism is harmed or killed tick on a deer
migration a behavioral cycle where animals move annually to feed or breed birds flying south in fall
dormancy a behavioral cycle where an organism slows down its metabolism to survive a harsh environment trees losing their leaves
hibernation a behavioral cycle where an animal slows down its metabolism to survive winter weather bear finding shelter and sleeping for winter
estivation a behavioral cycle where an animal slows down its metabolism to survive a desert climate desert toads burying themselves into ground
diurnal a behavior where organisms are active during the day birds are out during the day looking for insects & worms to eat
nocturnal a behavior where an organism is active at night bats are active at night feeding on insects and night flowers
mimicry using shape/color/ pattern to look like another animal robber fly and bee -- the robber fly looks like a bee, but, doesn't have a stinger
camouflage using color/shape/pattern to blend into the environment a rabbit's fur changing color depending on time of year

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
