Muscle tissue Tissue that is composed of cells that can contract
Nervous tissue Tissues that contains cells that receive and transmit messages int he form of electrical impluses
Epithelial tissue Tissue that consists of layers of cells that line or cover all internal and external body surfaces
Connective tissue Tissue that binds, supports, and protects structures in the body
Organ Consists of various tissues that work together to carry out a specific function
Axial skeleton Made up of the bones of the skull, ribs, spine, and sternum
Appendicular skeleton Made up of the bones of the arms and legs, along with the scapula, clavicle, and pelvis
Periosteum A tough membrane that covers the surface of bones and contains a network of blood vessels and nerves
Compact bone A layer of hard material under the periosteum
Spongy bone A network of connective tissue that lies under the compact bone
Bone marrow A soft tissue that can be either red or yellow and fills the shaft of bones
Fracture A crack or break in a bone
Fixed joints The place where two bones meet
Fixed joints Joints that prevent movement
Semimovable joints Joints that permit limited movement
Movable joints Most joints in the body, enable the body to perform a wide range of movements and activities
Ligaments Tough bands of collective tissue that hold the bones of a joint in place
Synovial fluid A lubricating substance produced by tissue that lines the surface of joints
Muscle fibers Elongated cells that make up skeletal muscle tissue
Voluntary muscles Muscles whose contraction can be consciously controlled; also known as skeletal muscles
Involuntary muscle Muscle whose movements cannot be consciously controlled
Tendon A tough fibrous cord of connective tissue that connects a muscle to bone
Flexor A muscle that bends a joint
Extenxsor A muscle that straightens a joint
