QuestionAnswer
What is Earth Science? the name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space
What does Earth Science include? Geology Oceanography Meteorology Astronomy
What is Geology divided into? Physical geology Historical geology
Describe the Nebular Hypothesis The nebular hypothesis describes the formation of the solar system. The planets and Sun began forming about 5 billion years ago from a large cloud of dust and gases. As the cloud contracted, it began to rotate and assume a disk shape
Protosun ::Was formed by material that was gravitationally pulled towards the center of the "disk shape" during the formation of the solar system.
Protoplanets Small centers in the rotating disk (protosun). They have high temperatures and weak gravitational fields
Hydrosphere The water portion of our planet
Biosphere The totality of life on Earth that interacts with each of the three physical realms and is an equally integral part of Earth.
Earth System The relationship and interaction between all 4 of Earth's spheres.
System A group of interacting parts that form a complex whole
Closed systems When energy moves freely in an out, but matter does not enter or leave the system.
Open System When both energy and matter move in and out of the system
Positive Feedback Mechanisms Natural systems have mechanisms that tend to enhance change
Negative Feedback Mechanisms Systems that have mechanisms in which change is resisted and have stabilize the system.
What are 2 Sources that Power the Earth System The Sun Heat from Earth's interior
How does the Sun power the Earth System? The sun drives the external processes that occur in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and Earth's Surface
Heat from Earth's interior Powers the internal process of Earth, and produces earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains.
Environment everything that surrounds and influences an organism. Influences can be biological, social, or physical
Resource An importance environmental demand that living things cannot live without.
Renewable resources Resources that can be used over and over, and be replenished over short time spans.
Nonrenewable resources Resources that cannot be used more than once, and can never be replaced.
Hypothesis An educated guess
Theory A concept or discovery that has yet to be proven %100 accurate.
Scientific Method The process through which scientists gather facts through observations and formulate scientific hypotheses and theories
Oceanography The study of the ocean Integrates Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and Biology
Meteorology The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather
Astronomy The study of the universe
