| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is astronomy? | The study of the universe. |
| What is the atmosphere? | A life-giving gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth. The atmosphere is thin and tenuous. |
| What is the biosphere? | It includes all life on Earth. |
| What is a closed system? | Energy moves freely in and out of the system, no matter enters or leaves the system. |
| What is the core? | The dense inner sphere of the Earth. |
| What is the crust? | The light and very thin outer skin of the Earth. It is thinnest beneath the oceans and thickest where the continents are. |
| What is Earth Science? | Is the name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space. Includes geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. |
| What is Earth System Science? | Aims to study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts, or subsystems. |
| What is an environment? | Refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism. |
| What is geology? | The study of the Earth. Physical and Historical. |
| What is the hydrosphere? | A dynamic mass of liquid that is continually in motion. |
| What is a hypothesis? | A tentative, or untested, explanation. |
| What is the lithosphere? | The rigid outer layer that includes the crust and the upper-most mantle. |
| What is the mantle? | The less dense part of the Earth. |
| What is meteorology? | The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate. |
| What is a model? | A less precise term that describes a scientific theory. |
| What is a nebular hypothesis? | Suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula, composed of mostly hydrogen and helium. |
| What is a negative feedback mechanism? | Work to maintain the system as it is. |
| What is a nonrenewable resource? | Resources that cannot be recycled or reused. Such as oil. |
| What is oceanography? | The study of oceans and the movement of its currents. |
| What is an open system? | Both energy and matter flow in and out of the system. |
| What is a paradigm? | Explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world. |
| What is a physical environment? | Encompasses water, air, soil, and rock as well as conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight. |
| What is a positve feedback mechanism? | Mechanisms that enhance or drive change. |
| What is a renewable resource? | Resources that can be replenished over short periods of time. |
| What is a system? | Can be any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole. |
| What is a theory? | A well-tested and widely accepted view that the scientific community agrees and best explains certain observable facts. |
