What is astronomy? The study of the universe.
What is the atmosphere? A life-giving gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth. The atmosphere is thin and tenuous.
What is the biosphere? It includes all life on Earth.
What is a closed system? Energy moves freely in and out of the system, no matter enters or leaves the system.
What is the core? The dense inner sphere of the Earth.
What is the crust? The light and very thin outer skin of the Earth. It is thinnest beneath the oceans and thickest where the continents are.
What is Earth Science? Is the name for all the sciences that collectively seek to understand Earth and its neighbors in space. Includes geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.
What is Earth System Science? Aims to study Earth as a system composed of numerous interacting parts, or subsystems.
What is an environment? Refers to everything that surrounds and influences an organism.
What is geology? The study of the Earth. Physical and Historical.
What is the hydrosphere? A dynamic mass of liquid that is continually in motion.
What is a hypothesis? A tentative, or untested, explanation.
What is the lithosphere? The rigid outer layer that includes the crust and the upper-most mantle.
What is the mantle? The less dense part of the Earth.
What is meteorology? The study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate.
What is a model? A less precise term that describes a scientific theory.
What is a nebular hypothesis? Suggests that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the solar nebula, composed of mostly hydrogen and helium.
What is a negative feedback mechanism? Work to maintain the system as it is.
What is a nonrenewable resource? Resources that cannot be recycled or reused. Such as oil.
What is oceanography? The study of oceans and the movement of its currents.
What is an open system? Both energy and matter flow in and out of the system.
What is a paradigm? Explains a large number of interrelated aspects of the natural world.
What is a physical environment? Encompasses water, air, soil, and rock as well as conditions such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight.
What is a positve feedback mechanism? Mechanisms that enhance or drive change.
What is a renewable resource? Resources that can be replenished over short periods of time.
What is a system? Can be any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole.
What is a theory? A well-tested and widely accepted view that the scientific community agrees and best explains certain observable facts.
