QuestionAnswer
Ecosystem the interaction of the living organisms with their environment (nonliving)
Population the group of organisms of the same species in an ecosystem (ex. rabbits)
Community all of the living organisms in an ecosystem
Producer organisms that make their own food.
Consumer an organism that feeds on other organisms.
Primary consumer organisms that feed on producers
Secondary consumer organisms that feed on consumers
Decomposer organisms that break down the remains of dead organisms back into smaller molecules that can be reused in the ecosystem
Carnivores organisms that eat animals
Herbivores organisms that eat plants
Omnivores organisms that eat plants and animals
Trophic level any class of organisms that occupy the same position in a food chain such as producers or primary consumers
Biomass the weight of living matter
Energy pyramid a model that shows the amount of energy at each trophic level.
Predator an organism that catches and feeds on another organism (prey)
Prey an organism that is hunted by another organism (predator)
Symbiosis a close relationship between two organisms of different species
Mutualism a symbiotic relationship between two organisms of different species where both organisms benefit.
Commensalism a symbiotic relationship between two organisms of different species in which one benefits and the other is unaffected.
Parasitism a symbiotic relationship between two organisms of different species in which one benefits and the other is harmed.
Aquatic organisms that live in water
abiotic nonliving factors in an ecosystem such as air
biotic living factors that support life such as other organisms
