Inquiry vocabulary
| Question | Answer |

| scientific method | a procedure used to solve problems and answer questions |
| hypothesis | a possible explanation, or educated quess, that is tested with an experiment |
| experiment | a careful, orderly test of a hypothesis |
| data | the information gained through observations and measurements |
| observation | using one or more of your five senses to gather information about the world |
| quantitative observation | descriptions or observations made using a form of measurement |
| qualitative observation | descriptions or observations made using only your five senses |
| inference | a possible explanation for an observation |
| variable | something in an experiment that can change |
| manipulated variable | the variable that you purposely change and test in an experiment |
| independent variable | another name for the manipulated variable |
| responding variable | something in an experiment that may change as a result of the manipulated variable |
| dependent variable | another name for the responding variable |
| conclusion | a statement that summarizes what you learned in an experiment |
