Chapter 6 Voc.

Science Vocabulary and Short Answers for Chapter 6

QuestionAnswer
Volcano A weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
Magma A mixture of molten material that is underground. It can come up to the surface of the Earth
Lava Magma that reached the surface of the Earth
Ring of Fire One major volcanic belt that borders the Pacific Ocean
Island Arc A string of islands that formed by the volcanoes along a deep ocean trench
Where do most Volcanoes form? At Divergent Boundaries or in Subduction Zones
Pyroclastic Flow Occurs when an explosive eruption hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gases
Hot Spot Is an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust like a blow torch, and forms islands and volcanoes as the magma hardens
Geo-Thermal Energy Heat energy in Earth's interior from water or steam that has been heated by magma
Silica The silica content of magma helps to determine whether the volcanic eruption is quiet or explosive
Shield Volcanoes They rise from hot spots and erupt thin layers of lava. Examples include Mauna Loa in Hawaii
Cinder Cone Volcanoes A steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain. If the volcanoes lava is thick and stiff, it may produce ash, cinders, and bombs. Examples include Sunset Crater in Arizona
Composite Volcanoes A tall, cone shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash. May produce cinders, ash, and bombs. Examples include Mt. Fuji in Japan, and Mount St. Helens in Washington
Batholith LArge rock masses form the core of many mountain ranges. I is a large body of magma cooling inside the crust
A volcano is a tall mountain or hill that erupts lava on occasion, though some volcanoes are extinct. Its a weak spot in the crust where magma can escape. Define a Volcano
Many volcanoes form at Divergent Boundaries and Convergent Boundaries. Some, although, form from hot spots and subduction zones. Explain where types of volcanoes form on different boundaries.
