| Earthquake | Is the shaking and trembling that results from the movement of rock beneath Earth's surface |
| Stress | The powerful force of pushing and pulling beneath Earth's surface |
| Compression | The force that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks |
| Tension | The stress force that pulls on the crust, stretching rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle |
| Shearing | Stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions |
| Epicenter | The point of the surface directly above the focus |
| Seismic Waves | Are vibrations that travel through the Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake |
| Liquifaction | Occurs when an earthquake's violent shaking suddenly turns loose, soft soil into liquid mud |
