Science Vocabulary and Short Answers for Chapter 5

QuestionAnswer
Earthquake Is the shaking and trembling that results from the movement of rock beneath Earth's surface
Stress The powerful force of pushing and pulling beneath Earth's surface
Compression The force that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks
Tension The stress force that pulls on the crust, stretching rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle
Shearing Stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions
Epicenter The point of the surface directly above the focus
Seismic Waves Are vibrations that travel through the Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake
Liquifaction Occurs when an earthquake's violent shaking suddenly turns loose, soft soil into liquid mud
The stress in the plates rubbing against eachother will build up and up. When the stress builds up so much, then the plates will slide quickly, and an Earthquake will occrr. There are three types of stress. Shearing, tension, and compression Explain the causes that lead to and start an Earthquake
Focus Is the point beneath Earth's surface where rock that is under stress breaks, triggering and Earthquake
