Science Vocabulary and Short Answers for Chapter 3

QuestionAnswer
Texture Is the size, shape, and pattern of the rock's grains
Grain A partacle of mineral or other rock that gives a rock it's texture
Igneous Rock A type of rock that forms from molten lava cooling at or below Earth's surface
Silica A material that forms from the elements of oxygen and slicon; Silica is formed in magma
Metamorphic Rock A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions
Sedimentary Rock A type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed or semented together
Extrusive Igneous rock that forms from lava cooling on Earth's surface
Intrusive Igneous rock that forms from magma cooling on Earth's surface
Erosion The process by whcih water, ice, wind, or gravity removes fragments of rock anad soil
Deposition The proccess by which sediment settle out of the water or wind that is carrying it, and it is placed in a new location
Foliated A term used to describe metamorphic rocks that have grains arranged in parallel layers or bands
Explain how the three different types of rocks are classified or identified Scientist classify rocks by observing and identifing the color, texture, and mineral composition. This allows the scientists to classify them into one of three sections. Metamorphic, Igneous, and Sedimentary rocks.
