Science Vocabulary and Short Answers for Chapter 2

Mineral Is a natrual ocurring, inorganic, solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical compostion
Streak The color of it's powder
Luster A term used to describe how a mineral reflects light from it's surface
Moh's Hardness Scale A scale ranking ten minerals from softest to hardest; Used in testing the hardness of minerals
Cleavage Measures how easily a mineral splits along a flat surface
Fracture Describes how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way
Density Is the mass in a given space, or mass per unit volume
Crystal A solid in which the atoms are arranged in a patter that repeats again and again
Magma Is molten material from the mantle that hardens to form rock
Lava Is magma that reaches the surface
Explain how the different characteristics of a mineral are used to identify the mineral. Each mineral can be identified by its own physical and chemical characteristics. Some of the properties to test for include hardness, color, streak, luster, density, cleavage, fracture, and crystal structures
Define mineral, and explain each part of the definition. The mineral is a solid figure, with a definite chemical composition, which means that there are certain proportions of each element. It also has a repeating pattern of particles or a crystal structure, and it doesn't have any living thing's remains
