C1) Cell Theory&SA:V
The cell is the unit of structure and function in most organisms.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the cell theory? | Cells are the basic unit of life. All living organisms are composed of cells. They may be unicellular or multicellular. Cells arise from pre-existing cells. |
| How many times can light microscopes magnify? | Up to 1500 |
| How do light microscopes work? | By relying on the light passing through a very thin section of tissue. |
| What are the components of a light microscope? | Light is focussed through a series of lenses. The lens near the eye called the eyepiece lens and the one near the object is called the objective lens. |
| What special objective lens might a light microscope have? | An oil immersion lens between the lens and the object that enables maximum magnification. |
| How many times can electron microscopes magnify? | About 100,000 |
| How do electron microscopes work? | By relying on beams of electrons passing through a vacuum and then through a thin layer of tissue. |
| What is a Transmission Electron Microscope? | Electrons are transmitted to provide great detail of cellular structures. |
| What is a Scanning Electron Microscope? | The object is scanned to give a 3D effect. |
| What are cells measured in? | Micrometres (μm) |
| What are structures in cells measured in? | Nanometres (nm) |
| How many nanometres in 1 micrometre? | 1000 |
| What are the smallest cells? | Bacterium |
| What are larger cells? | Mesophyll cells in plants |
| Why is a larger surface area to volume ratio better? | Cells are able to obtain their nutrients an dispose of wastes more efficiently. |
