The chemical unit of genetic information in most organisms is DNA

What is DNA composed of? A long sugar phosphate backbone with organic bases attached to deoxyribose sugars.
What does A stand for? Adenine
What does T stand for? Thymine
What does C stand for? Cytosine
What does G stand for? Guanine
What kind of bonds do complementary bases form? Weak, hydrogen bonds
What is the 'human genome project'? An undertaking to work out the sequence of the bases in the total human genome.
What are the two strands of DNA called? Template and complementary
What shape is DNA? Double helical
Why are hydrogen bonds so important? They can easily be broken and reformed, which is essential in DNA replication and protein synthesis.
What is a nucleotide? A sugar, phosphate and base.
What are macromolecules? Large organic molecules in cells including nucleic acids, proteins, polysaccharides and lipids.
What is organic? Substances derived from living cells or organisms, which are generally large molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
