7H rocks

QuestionAnswer
What are rocks made out of? Rocks are made out of different grains.
What do rocks have other than grains? Ricks have mixtures of different minerals.
The chemicals in rocks, what are they called? They are called minerals.
The grains in rocks can be in__________ and___________ different sizes and shapes.
The combination of sizes and shapes of grains are called________ Are called the texture of the rock.
What is interlocking? interlocking is the grains in the rock all fit together with no gaps.
Interlocking grains are sometimes called_________ crystals.
How are igneous rocks made and give one example of an igneous rock. Igneous rocks are made when molten rock cools down. for example Granite.
Explain how metamorphic rocks are made and sedimentary rokcks are made? Metamorphic rocks fprm when existing rocks are heated or squashed. Sedimnetary rocks are formed when tiny grains of existing rocks become stuck together.
What is porous? porous is when some of the rocks has rounded grains that can absorb water because it can get into the gaps between the grains.
What is permeable? Permeable is when water can run through them.
What does rain contain? It contains dissolved gases from the air that make it slightly acidic.
What happens when rain falls onto rocks? It is when rain fall onto rocks it reacts with the minerals in that rock.
What happens if its hot for the minerals in the rock? They expand(get bigger)
What happens if minerals in the rock cool down? They contract(get smaller)
Where do physical weathering usually take place? They normally take place in deserts and often causes sheets of rocks to peel off.
What is freeze-thaw action? It is a type of physical weathering that happens when water gets into a crack in a rock and freezes. The freezing water expands and makes the crack bigger.
What is biological weathering? it is when rocks are worn away or broken up due to the activities of living things.
If rocks can fall into a stream or river, they can get___________ Transported(carried away)
What happens to abrasion? They move by the water, the rock fragments knock against each other and wear away.
What is when some of the bits of rock or sand in streams or river called? It is called sediment.
What are Glaciers? Glaciers are rivers made of ice.
What is deposited? It is when sediments are carried by water or ice when the water slows down or when the ice melts.
What is compaction? Compaction is when it squeezes the water out from the gaps between the grains.
Why are they called fossil fuels? Because they were formed by the remain of plants and animals.
How is Coal formed? Coal was formed when swamps were buried by sediments.
How are Oil and natural gas formed? They are formed when tiny sea plantts and animals became buried by sediments.
