Investigating Our Solar System Terms

| Spiral Galaxy | A galaxy that has a center bulge with old stars and arms with new stars |
| Elliptical Galaxy | A galaxy shaped like an egg or ball with mostly old stars |
| Irregular Galaxy | A galaxy with no defined shape |
| Sun | The only star in our solar system |
| Corona | The halo like layer that we can only see during a solar eclipse |
| Revolution | The movement of an object around another object, causes years |
| Rotation | The spinning of an object on its axis, causes days |
| Orbit | The path that a body follows as it travels around another body in space |
| Solar System | A group of planets that revolve around a star |
| Inner Planets | The small rocky planets that have a longer rotation but a shorter revolution. |
| Outer Planets | The large gassy planets that have a shorter rotation but a longer revolution. |
| Solar Eclipse | The moon moves between the sun and the Earth, we see the sun’s corona |
| Lunar Eclipse | The moon passes through the Earth’s shadow , the moon looks red |
| Gravity | The force of attraction between objects, it keeps objects in orbit |
| Meteoroid | A small piece of rock/metal in space, usually a piece of an asteroid or comet |
| Meteorite | An object from space that has landed on Earth’s surface |
| Meteor | A shooting star shooting stars. |
| Asteroid | A ball of metal and rock that orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter |
| Comet | A ball of ice, gas, and dust that’s tail always points away from the sun |
| First Quarter | The phase of the moon where the right half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| Third Quarter | The phase of the moon where the left half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| Waning Crescent | When less than half of the left half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| Waxing Gibbous | When more than half of the right half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| Waning Gibbous | When more than half of the left half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| Waxing Crescent | When less than half of the right half of the moon’s circle is lit |
| New Moon | When none of the moon is visible from Earth |
| Galaxy | There are billions of them in the universe, our solar system is part of one |
| Two | The number of high tides one area receives in a 24 hour period |
| Tides | The daily changes in the level of the oceans and other large bodies of water |
