Terminology

QuestionAnswer
Contraindication An aspect of a patient's condition that does not agree with the treatment.
Diagnosis Health care professionals (doctors, nurses, or technitions) determine the patients condition or disease, following tests and exams.
Distribution Drug is passes to the cells of various organs following absorption.
Electrolytes Salts that the body requires in its fluids that are essential in nerve, muscle, and heart functions.
Excretion Body eliminates waste after metabolism and distribution.
Half-Life Amount of time it takes for half of a substance to be broken down in the body and excreted.
Immunity The ability to fight off infections from bacteria and viruses.
Indication Use of a drug for treating a particular disease.
Local Small area or single part of the body.
Metabolism The physical and chemical processes of the body that convert comsumed food into energy for use by the tissues and organs.
Pathogen A microorganism (bacteria or virus) that causes disease.
Pharmacology Study of drugs and their effects on the body.
Side Effects Unwanted reactions to a substance or combination of substances.
Systemic Refers to the whole body.
Tolerance Body has become unresponsive to a substance after prolonged exposure.
Absorption Time it takes for a drug to work after the drug has been administered; the rate at which the drug passes from the intesrines into the bloodstream.
Acute A disease or illness with a sudden onset and a short duration.
Adverse Reaction Unwanted or unexpected side effect to a medication.
Allergy Sensitivity of the immune system to a chemical or drug.
Antibody Protein produced by the immune system to respond to foreign substances in the body
Chronic Disease or illness that has a long duration.
Clinical Trials Scientific experiments that test the effect of a drug in human test patients.
