| Invertebrate | An animal without a backbone. |
| Vertebrate | An animal with a backbone. |
| Bilateral Symmetry | Line symmetry: the quality of being divisible into two halves that are mirror images. |
| Radial Symmetry | The quaity of having many lines of symmetry that all pass through a central point. |
| Ectotherm | An animal whose body does not produce much internal heat. |
| Endotherm | An animal whose body controls and regulates its temperature by controlling the internal heat it produces. |
| Vertebrae | The bones that make up the backbone of an animal. |
| Cartilage | A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that gives support to some parts of the body. |
| Adaptation | A characteristic that helps and organism survive in its environment and reproduce. |
