Kramer, Leaf Anatomy
Vocab. over the anatomy of a leaf
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cuticle | The waxy layer on the epidermis |
| Bundle Sheath Cells | The outer layer of the vein within the leaf. They create a circle around the xylem and the phloem |
| Epidermis | These are cells at the top and bottom surfaces of the leaf. They form an outer covering for the leaf, a little bit like the skin in humans |
| Guard Cells | Banana shaped cells that surrounds the stomate. These cells regulate water loss by opening and closing the stomate |
| Mesophyll | The middle of the leaf. It contains two layers, the palisade cells and the spongy layer. |
| Palisade Cells | Part of the Mesophyll with the spongy layer. More column-like cells that lie just under the epidermis. |
| Phloem | The bundles of tubes that takes sugar to other parts to the plant |
| Spongy Layer | Part of the Mesophyll with the palisade cells. These cells, in the middle of the leaf, are surrounded by air spaces. |
| Stomate | Tiny holes in the epidermis of the leaf through which carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapor pass |
| Transpiration | The process of water vapor leaving the cells of a leaf. |
| Vascular Bundle | Fluids, minerals and sugar flow through plants in these channels |
| Xylem | The bundles of tubes that brings water and minerals to the cell |
