Chp. 4 bio

general features of cells

QuestionAnswer
Unicellular bacteria made of just one cell.
Multicellular more complex org. like animals. they are made up of many kinds of specialized cells.
Cells are bounded by plasma membrane
the plasma membrane encloses the cytoplasm
all cells contain genetic material(DNA or RNA)
all cells have ribosomes (protein factories)
organisms can be broadly classified as prokaryotes and eukaryotes
prokaryotes are comprised of bacteria, archaea and viruses
eukaryotes are comprised of protists, fungi, animals, and plants.
Prokaryotic cells are the smallest living things. They do not have a nucleus.
prokaryotic cell structure 1) DNA(arranged as nucleoid) 2) ribosomes 3) plasma membranes 4) cell wall 5) pili 6) flagella 7) capsule(in certain bacteria)
small cells have a larger surface area to volume ratio. this permits rapid exchange of materials. very large cells cannot survive.
all eukaryotic cells have certain features in common 1)Nucleus containing DNA 2)Ribosomes 3)Plasma membrane 4)Mitochondria 5)Golgi apparatus 6)Endoplasmic reticulum 7)Peroxisome 8)Cytoskeleton
eukaryotic cells features cont. Additional features unique to animal cells: 1)Flagellum 2)Lysosome 3)Centriole Additional features unique to plant cells: 1)Cell wall 2)Chloroplasts 3)Central vacuole
All eukaryotic cell have a nucleus, cytoplasm, and organelles - smaller structures within the cell. Example mitochondria, chloroplasts
Nucleus contains most of the DNA in eukaryotic cell.(mitochondria and chloroplasts have some DNA)
the nuceus is surrounded by two membranes, the nuclear envelope. Small materials leave and enter the nucleus through nuclear pores.
Nucleolus is a small region within the nucleus where ribosomes are made (ribosomes are used in making proteins).
Larger DNA molecules(long fibers) and the proteins attached are called chromatin. Each fiber is a chromosome.
Ribosomes are particles made up of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and proteins. where most cell proteins made.
Mitochondria are where energy (ATP) is produced by cellular respiration.
golgi apparatus is a stack of membrane sacs where proteins are further modified and then shipped to their final destination
lysosomes contains digestive enzymes that break down molecules, bacteria, etc.
vacuoles like lysosomes are membranous sacs and are present mostly in plants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
