Water and the fitness of the Environment

QuestionAnswer
Polarity of water molecules result in hydrogen bonding
Water is Cohesive they stick to each other.
Capillary action water molecules can pull other water molecules along with them, even against the force of gravity.
Surface tension is a measure of how hard it is to break the surface of a liquid. Ex. not being heavy enough to disrupt hydrogen bonds to float.
high specific heat it takes a lot of energy to change temp of water.
Water is a good solvent
Solvent is a substance present in a larger amount in a solution
solute is a substance present in smaller amount in a solution
solution is a solute + solvent.
Polar ionic compounds dissolve in water. allows them to move around and react with other molecules in cells
Hydrophilic water loving
Hydrophobic water fearing
Nonpolar molecules will not dissolve and instead tend to cluster together. cell membranes.
ph scales measures the concentrations of H+ ions in a solution
acidic ph of 1 to 6.9 is acidic. hydrochloric acid, vinegar, lemon juice,
neutral ph 7
basic (alkaline) ph of 7.1 - 14 is basic. common bases include ammonia, bleach, oven cleaner.
Buffer is a solution that resists change in pH, blood contains many buffers. ph 7.4
Antacids are buffers that are used to maintain stomach acid at the right level.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
