| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| hydrocarbon | molecules with predominantly or entirely hydrogen-carbon bonds; tend to be soluble in water |
| isomer | two structures with an identical molecular formula but different structures and characteristics |
| structural isomer | contain the same atoms but in a different bonding relationship |
| stereoisomer | have identical bonding relationships but the spatial positioning of the atom differs in the two isomers |
| functional group | groups of atoms with characteristic chemical features and properties |
| cis-trans isomers | two hydrogen atoms linked to the two carbons of a c=c double bond may be on the same side of the carbons, meaning cis, or if hydrogens are on opposite sides, trans double bond |
| enantiomers | exists as a pair of molecules that are mirror images |
| condensation reaction | the process by which two or more molecules combine into a larger one |
| dehydration reaction | a molecule of water is removed when the monomers combine |
| hydrolysis reaction | the process by which a polymer is broke down into monomers |
| carbohydrates | composed of CHO |
| monosaccharide | the simplest sugars |
