Vocabulary over seeds and their early development
| Question | Answer |

| Seed Coat | Tough, almost airtight covering of the seed. |
| Embryo | Early plant tissue that gives rise to the new plant. |
| Cotyledon | The energy supply, in the form of starch, for the newly forming plant |
| Dormant | The inactive stage of living organisms. |
| Monocot | Seed that has one cotyledon |
| Dicot | Seed that has two cotyledons |
| Root cap | A mass of cells at the very tip of the root. The cap protects the root tip as it pushes through the soil |
| Root tip | Area just behind the root cap. The cells are very small and are actively dividing. |
| Zone of Elongation | Stretched out cells that still have their nuclei. Located a short distance from the root tip. |
| Zone of Maturation | These are older cells located after the zone of elongation. Some of these cells have root hairs. |
| Root Hairs | Extensions of the cells in the zone of maturation. Root hairs take up water and minerals from the soil |
| Vascular Channel | Takes water and nutrients to the plant |
